One of the most common questions we receive is “How long does an IUD last?” Whether you’re new to birth control or exploring longer-term options, we’re here to share answers and empower you to make informed decisions.
Hormonal vs. Copper IUDs: How Long Each One Lasts
IUDs are small, T-shaped devices that are placed in the uterus to prevent pregnancy safely and effectively. They come in two main types — hormonal and non-hormonal — and their lifespans vary based on the specific brand.
Hormonal IUDs
These release progestin to prevent pregnancy and tend to lighten periods:
- Mirena®: Lasts up to 8 years
- Liletta®: Lasts up to 8 years
- Kyleena®: Lasts up to 5 years
- Skyla®: Lasts up to 3 years
All hormonal IUDs are over 99% effective and may also reduce menstrual cramping.
Copper IUD
Paragard® is a copper IUD that lasts up to 10 years. This hormone-free option uses copper to block sperm and is ideal if you prefer non-hormonal birth control.
When Should an IUD Be Replaced?
Each IUD has a maximum lifespan, after which it must be removed. Your provider may recommend earlier removal if you have side effects, want to switch methods, or are planning a pregnancy. If you’re happy with your IUD, you can usually replace it with a new one during the same appointment.
What to Expect From IUD Placement and Removal
Both insertion and removal are in-office procedures that typically take just a few minutes. Some cramping is normal, but downtime is minimal. At Northwest Women’s Center, our skilled team explains every step to ensure your comfort and keep you informed throughout the process.
