Common Gynecological Causes of Abdominal Pain
Abdominal discomfort can stem from many sources. However, when it comes to gynecological issues, some culprits are more likely than others.
Uterine Fibroids
Fibroids are noncancerous uterine growths that can lead to cramping, bloating, and prolonged or heavy periods. Depending on their size and location, they may also press against other organs, leading to additional discomfort.
Ovarian Cysts
These fluid-filled sacs often resolve on their own, but some ovarian cysts can grow large or rupture, causing sharp or sudden pain on one side of the abdomen. Ongoing or recurrent cysts may need evaluation.
Endometriosis
This condition occurs when tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus. Endometriosis can trigger intense pain during periods, as well as chronic pelvic or abdominal discomfort.
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
PID is a bacterial infection that impacts the reproductive organs. It can develop from untreated STDs or other infections. Symptoms may include lower abdominal or pelvic pain, fever, and abnormal discharge.
Menstrual Cramps (Dysmenorrhea)
While common, severe or debilitating period pain shouldn’t be ignored. It could signal underlying disorders such as endometriosis or fibroids.
When to Seek Medical Attention
Not all abdominal pain requires urgent care, but you should consult a gynecologist if it is:
- Persistent or progressively getting worse
- Accompanied by fever, vomiting, or unusual discharge
- Impeding your daily activities or quality of life
