What to Expect at Your Six-Week Postpartum Visit

Woman holding her baby during six-week postpartum visit in Houston

A six-week postpartum visit gives you time to check how your body is healing, talk about your emotional well-being, review birth control and future pregnancy plans, and ask about bleeding, pain, sleep, feeding, or bladder changes. Postpartum care is part of obstetric care, and it continues after you leave the hospital or birth center.

Northwest Women’s Center in Houston, TX, cares for women during pregnancy, delivery, and the postpartum period. The team includes Christopher M. McGuirk, MD, FACOG, and Dudley D. Baker IV, MD, FACOG, both board-certified OB/GYNs and Fellows of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Dr. Baker has practiced in North Houston since 1991.

Is Six Weeks the Only Postpartum Checkup You Need?

Not necessarily. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (opens in new tab) recommends postpartum care as an ongoing process, with an initial check-in within the first three weeks after birth and a comprehensive visit no later than 12 weeks after delivery.

Many women still have that comprehensive checkup around six weeks. Your timing can differ based on your delivery, pregnancy complications, blood pressure, incision healing, emotional health, or other medical needs.

What Happens at a Six-Week Postpartum Visit?

Your visit is a chance to review physical recovery and how you’re adjusting after birth. Depending on your needs, your OB/GYN can discuss:

  • Healing after delivery: Your clinician can check a cesarean incision, perineal tear, pelvic discomfort, bleeding, or other recovery concerns.
  • Mood and emotional health: Postpartum depression and anxiety screening help identify symptoms that need care.
  • Feeding and breast concerns: You can bring up breastfeeding, pumping, nipple pain, milk supply, or feeding questions.
  • Bladder and bowel changes: Discuss urine leakage, constipation, painful urination, or trouble controlling gas or stool.
  • Sex and contraception: You can ask about discomfort, libido, when to resume sex, birth control, and spacing future pregnancies.
  • Health after pregnancy: Your clinician may review gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid conditions, or other health concerns that need follow-up after pregnancy.

Your clinician may also perform a pelvic exam based on your recovery and symptoms. You might also complete cervical cancer screening if you’re due based on your screening schedule or follow-up history.

What Should You Ask About?

Bring up anything that doesn’t feel right or that you’re unsure about, even when it seems small. Questions about exercise, sleep, pelvic floor issues, medications, returning to work, sex, or future pregnancies all belong in postpartum care.

You don’t need to wait for the six-week mark when symptoms are concerning. Your obstetric team can tell you when you need earlier evaluation.
