What are the causes of pelvic pain?

Pelvic Pain All women deal with pelvic pain and discomfort at some point in their lives, though it is often related to one’s menstrual cycle. However, some women experience pelvic pain and abdominal pain on a regular basis, or may start experiencing discomfort that signifies a change in their body. When women are concerned about their pelvic pain, they need to see a doctor to determine the cause.

There are many reasons why a woman would experience pelvic pain. Below are just a few of the most common causes of pelvic pain in women who visit Northwest Women’s Center:

  • Menstrual pain and cramps
  • Ovulation
  • Interstitial cystitis
  • Cystitis or urinary tract infection
  • Sexually transmitted diseases and infections
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Endometriosis
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Appendicitis
  • Urinary stones/kidney stones
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Pelvic adhesions
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Tumors

When to consider an evaluation with your doctor

Because of the wide range of causes of pelvic pain, it is important that women speak to their medical provider about their experiences. While some pains may be “run of the mill” pains associated with the reproductive cycle, it may also be a sign of a more serious medical problem. Women should seek the assistance of a doctor if they have new or severe pelvic pain that has begun with no understood cause. Additionally, patients who have vaginal bleeding and other concerning symptoms that occur with pelvic pain should schedule an appointment with their doctor. While some conditions such as infections may clear up on their own, it is still a good idea to call Northwest Women’s Center and book an appointment to reduce the risk of complications or other problems that can increase if left untreated.

How is the cause of pelvic pain determined?

When patients visit their doctor, they will describe the problems they are experiencing. This will allow the doctor to determine the best course of action in evaluating the area and getting a proper diagnosis for the patient.
