Treatment of ovarian cysts

Ovarian Cysts At Northwest Women’s Center in Houston, TX, we are pleased to assist women with their reproductive health. The female reproductive system is relatively complex, and when problems arise, it is essential that women see an experienced professional to ensure issues are diagnosed and addressed. A common concern seen in our practice is that of ovarian cysts.

What is an ovarian cyst?

An ovarian cyst is a growth that can develop in the ovaries. This condition is often spotted during a pelvic examination. They range in size and can be fluid-filled or solid. Ovarian cysts can be problematic for some women, and so a proper diagnosis and treatment is often suggested. The doctor may evaluate a patient or use diagnostic testing to determine the type of ovarian cysts to decide which treatment is best. Diagnostic tests may include:

  • Pelvic ultrasounds
  • Laparoscopy
  • Blood testing

In most cases, ovarian cysts are benign, but it is beneficial for women to have blood testing done to check for elevated cancer levels which may point to the need for a biopsy.

Treatment for an ovarian cyst

Depending on the patient’s symptoms, reproductive age, and the size and type of the cyst, treatment can be recommended. In some cases, it may be best to monitor the cyst and re-examine a patient later in a few months to determine if the cyst becomes problematic or changes in size. Some can go away on their own over a few months. Alternatively, patients may be given medication such as birth control pills which can help keep ovarian cysts from developing. This medication will not shrink an ovarian cyst that has already developed. n more serious cases, surgery may be suggested to remove an ovarian cyst that causes a patient continued pain or problems. The removed cyst may be tested to determine if it is cancerous, in which the doctor may refer a patient to a cancer specialist for further treatment.
